Designations

AAFAME encourages it's engineer members to seek designations to further advance their career & their value to building owners. Currently 22% of our engineer members have a designation of some kind and it is proven that they are improving their career with better positions & higher salary.

The primary designation for the engineer members is the SMA (System Maintenance Administrator) offered through BOMI International (local courses hosted by BOMA Austin). BOMI also offers certificate programs: SMC (Building Systems Maintenance Certificate) & BEC (Building Energy Certificate). Additional BOMI designations include the RPA (Real Property Administrator) & FMA (Facility Management Administrator) for those interested in management positions. Contact BOMA Austin to register for the BOMI courses held in Austin, Texas. Here is their upcoming education scheduled. You can also do self-study to earn designation if you do not wish to attend in person instructor led course.

Those with a BOMI designations are required to attend 18 hours of Continuing Education every 3 years. AAFAME helps to fulfill this requirement as a recognized BOMI education provider. Members can receive credit for attending luncheons (1/2 hour) & training classes (2 hours). In addition you can receive credit (2 hours per year) for being a member and you earn additional credit (3 hours per year) by serving on a committee.

Another designation to consider is the LEED GA & AP (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) designations recognized by the USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council).

AAFAME offers a scholarship for those whose employers do not offer tuition assistance.
