The Life of a Building Engineer!

Wednesday, December 20, 2017

T’was the night before Christmas, your whole building’s asleep

Not a tenant was whining, not even a peep

The lights were all dimmed, just machinery hummed

When up drove a crew, who was feeling quite bummed

Their children at home were all snug in their beds

While visions of I-pads danced in their heads

But the maintenance crew was there and ready to start

Because the pride in their work, came from deep in their heart

Figgie Pudding had been dropped on the main lobby floor

They guessed it was Bob, from Suite 204

When out on the lawn there rose such a clatter

They moved to the window to see,, ‘what’s the matter?’

The moon on the lawn of the new-fallen snow

Showed the last office party was now on the go

When, what to their wondering eyes should  appear?

Out of suite 300 strolled several reindeer

Oh my, said the supervisors, this could be quite a night

And the crew rolled their eyes, for in fact, it just might

The post party in 210 reached way past the door

Out into the hall the trash littered the floor

Beer cans and wrapping paper and pizza boxes galore

The crew was prepared,, and they should expect more

A Toilet on 5 had for sure overflowed

And they thought for a second about hitting the road

But the cookies and milk -with a note- left in suite 305

Was just the right gift to keep them alive

So out came the brooms and the buckets and the mops

Building maintenance gives service that’s always the tops

And they smiled and they sang while they worked through the night

Hoping, yes, hoping the reindeer’ d take flight

They polished and dusted and put on a shine

Cause they’re proud of the work they do after nine

So they worked their way up to the executive suite

Where the fire place puffed, still putting out heat

And there stood a man dressed in fur, from his head to his foot

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot

A bundle of goodies he had flung on his back

And he looked like a vendor, just opening his pack

His eyes-how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

The crew laughed when they saw him, in spite of themselves

On Monica, on Martin, on Maria, Daniel & Jose

You’ve got plenty of work before Christmas Day!

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

The team wrapped their cleaning and dashed down the stairs

It’s important you know, just how much this crew cares!

They sprang to the van, to the team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle

But I heard them exclaim, as they drove out of sight,

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!
